Welcome to the Arts Society Wolverhampton

We are a very active group with a diverse series of events and projects that occur throughout the year. With around 300 members, we enjoy many different aspects of the arts through lectures, visits and special projects. Meetings are held every second Monday of the month at Linden House, Tettenhall Road.

MONDAY, 10TH FEBRUARY 2020
WHISTLER
James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American who painted during the American Gilded Age although based in Great Britain. His delicate art parallels music being often titled arrangements, harmonies and nocturnes. Our talk explores his art and life.

Lecturer Lydia Bauman
Lydia Bauman was born in Poland and has studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Courtauld Institute. She has lectured at the National Gallery and MFA Boston.

WILLIAM POWELL FRITH: A PRIVATE LIFE OF A VICTORIAN PAINTER

This lecture concerns the Victorian artist William Powell Frith whose vast panoramic painting created a sensation in Victorian Britain. In addition to his traditional artistic life his personal life was complex and involved the maintenance of two families. His “A Private View at the Royal Academy” is examined in detail.

Lecturer Stephen Richardson
Stephen Richardson is an art historian with a particular interest in the Georgian period. He has lectured for U3A, Workers Educational Association, Probus and the National Trust and is a guide at the Royal Academy and the V & A.
